This Week’s Prompt: Can You Live a Fulfilling Life Without Being “In Love”?

Prompt runs until 22nd March 2026

We talk about love constantly. In songs, in films, in the advice we give each other at kitchen tables and over text messages at midnight. And yet, for all the words we pour into it, love remains stubbornly hard to pin down.

This week’s prompt asks you to sit with three questions that are simpler to say than they are to answer:

Can you live a fulfilling life without being “in love”? What does that even mean? And is love something we have any control over?

They might feel like three separate questions, but pull on any one of them and the others follow. Because before you can decide whether a life without romantic love is a full life, you have to ask what “in love” actually means to you — and that question leads almost immediately to whether love is something that happens to you, or something you choose, or some uncomfortable mix of both.
